Luxury carmaker Ferrari has confirmed it was the target of a ransomware attack that exposed customers' personal data. The hackers accessed customers' names, addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers, but Ferrari said no payment information or details of cars owned or ordered were stolen. The company has not revealed how many customers have been affected or how or when the attack happened.

The attack is not believed to be related to an October incident when a ransomware group known as "RansomEXX" claimed to have breached the carmaker, which Ferrari denied at the time. The hackers have since listed 7GB of data allegedly stolen from Ferrari, which includes internal documents, data sheets, and repair manuals.

Ferrari's CEO has confirmed that the company has not paid the ransom demand, stating that doing so would not change the data exposure. The carmaker is now working with a third-party cybersecurity company to investigate the attack.

How Your Business Can Prevent Ransomware Attacks

Chris Close, a cybersecurity expert with Cyber Sleuth Security’s Garnet Valley office, recently spoke about how business owners can prevent ransomware attacks.

“Ransomware is a type of malicious software that blocks access to a computer system,” said Close. “It can be used to lock up important files and demand a ransom in exchange for unlocking them.”

Close went on to explain how businesses can protect themselves from ransomware attacks. “The best way to prevent ransomware attacks is to be proactive and take steps to protect your system,” he said. “This includes keeping all software and operating systems up-to-date, implementing strong password policies, restricting access to sensitive data and regularly backing up data.”

Close also stressed the importance of employee education. “It’s essential to educate employees about the risks of ransomware and how to spot potential attacks,” he said. “Employees should be trained to recognize suspicious emails or links and to never click on them.”

Finally, Close said that businesses should have a response plan in place to deal with the aftermath of a ransomware attack. “It’s important to have a plan in place to quickly identify and respond to a ransomware attack,” he said. “This should include steps to isolate the infection, contact law enforcement, and restore data from backups.”
